Overview

Music Studies within the Bachelor of Music (BMus) is an innovative and dynamic major that offers interdisciplinary study across the areas of musicology, ethnomusicology, theory and analysis, performance, and jazz studies. You can engage in areas as diverse as New Zealand music, European art music, music ethnography, Māori, Pacific, and Asian music, film music, historically-informed performance practice, popular music, and jazz.

Music Studies will provide you with skills in critical thinking, listening, research, writing, communication and presentation that are transferable to a number of different fields and careers.

Undergraduate information

BMus major requirements

Music Studies without specialisation

  1. MUSC 105; 20 points from MUSC 164, 166; any PERF or CMPO course; 20 points from MUSC 120–159 and 20 points from MUSC 120–174
  2. 80 MUSC, PERF, or CMPO points at 200 level, including at least 40 points from MUSC 220–259; and
  3. 75 MUSC, PERF, or CMPO points at 300 level, including at least 20 points from MUSC 320–359

Music Studies with a specialisation in Musicology

  1. MUSC 105, 166, 167; any PERF or CMPO course; and 20 points from MUSC 130–139
  2. MUSC 266; 40 points from MUSC 230–239; and 20 points from MUSC 220–259; and
  3. 75 MUSC, PERF, or CMPO points at 300 level, including at least 60 points from MUSC 320–359, of which at least 20 points must be from MUSC 330–339 and at least 20 points from MUSC 330–349

Music Studies with a specialisation in Ethnomusicology

  1. MUSC 105, 150, PERF 151; and 20 points from MUSC 164, MUSC 166
  2. MUSC 264 or MUSC 266, 15 points from PERF 250–259; 60 further MUSC, PERF, or CMPO points at 200 level, including at least 40 points from MUSC 220–269, of which 20 points must be from MUSC 248–259; and
  3. 75 MUSC, PERF, or CMPO points at 300 level, including at least 60 points from MUSC 320–369, of which 40 points must be from MUSC 349–359

Music Studies with a specialisation in Jazz Studies

  1. MUSC 105, 125, 164; at least 10 points from PERF 120–129; 20 points from MUSC 130–159
  2. 80 MUSC, PERF, or CMPO points at 200 level, including MUSC 264, CMPO 235, and 20 points from MUSC 225–229; and
  3. 75 MUSC, PERF, or CMPO points at 300 level, including at least 20 points from MUSC 325–329 and 20 points from MUSC 320–324, 330–359
